Chile, from the outside
This page is in English, so it is mostly for people outside Chile: curious about a long, narrow country they may know mainly from photographs of the Andes, and wondering what it is like to talk to someone who lives there. That is a reasonable thing to want, and a random video chat is a decent way to try it. If you read Spanish, the Spanish version of this page is the one written for Chileans.
Expect Chilean Spanish to be fast
Chilean Spanish has a reputation, even among other Spanish speakers, for speed and slang. Sentences end in po, questions end in ¿cachai? ("you get it?"), and syllables at the end of words tend to disappear. If you learned textbook Spanish, say so early. Most people slow down happily, and many in Santiago switch to English for a while if you are struggling.
The country also changes a lot from north to south. Someone in La Serena, near the desert, lives a different daily life from someone in Temuco or Concepción, and those regional differences make good conversation material. Ask where they are and what the weather is doing; in Chile the answer is rarely the same twice.
Timing a call to Chile
Mainland Chile runs on UTC-4, moving to UTC-3 in the southern summer. Evenings there are the easy window: from North America that is usually your afternoon or early evening, and from Europe it lands late at night. Weekends are looser — plenty of people in Santiago head to the coast, and evenings start later.
