Who this page is for
This is the English page for Peru, which mostly means it is for people outside Peru: travellers who fell for Cusco and want to keep practising their Spanish, people with Peruvian family abroad, and anyone curious enough to search for a "Peru chat". Peruvians themselves are better served by the Spanish version.
What you are signing up for
Nothing, literally — there is no sign-up. You open the chat, allow your camera, and a random stranger appears. You talk for as long as you both want, and either of you can skip at any moment. The person you meet may be in Lima, Arequipa or Trujillo, or somewhere else entirely, because the queue is shared worldwide.
Small things that help
- Food is the universal opener. Ask about ceviche, or where the best lomo saltado is. Peruvians are proud of their kitchen, with good reason.
- Learn two words of local slang. Pata means friend, chévere means great. Using them badly still earns goodwill.
- Mind the clock. Peru is on UTC-5 all year, with no daylight saving. Evenings in Lima are mornings in much of Asia.
- Tourism talk is fine, briefly. People from Cusco or Chiclayo have heard about Machu Picchu before. Ask about their week instead.
Why practise Spanish this way
Classes teach you to order coffee. A conversation with a stranger teaches you to keep up when someone answers faster than you expected, uses a word your textbook never mentioned, and then laughs at your accent in a friendly way. Peruvian Spanish is a good place to do that: in Lima it is generally clear and not too fast, and people are used to visitors trying. Say at the start that you are learning, and most people will slow down. If a match is not working, skip without guilt — the next person might be the one who spends twenty minutes explaining the difference between chibolo and pata.
