Argentinian video chat, in English
If you are reading this in English, you are probably not in Argentina — or you are, and you want to practise your English on someone who is not. Either way, the useful thing to know is that Argentinians mostly read and write in Spanish, so the Spanish version of this page is the one aimed at people there. This one is for everyone else.
What a call with Argentina is like
It starts the way every match here does: you allow the camera, a stranger appears, and you both decide in a few seconds whether to keep going. There is no profile to read first and no account to make. If it clicks, talk as long as you like; if it does not, skip and the next person arrives.
What tends to be different is the pace once it does click. Argentine conversation is quick, ironic and happy to argue about football. People from Buenos Aires speak fast and drop the ends of words; Córdoba has a sing-song accent the rest of the country loves to imitate; Rosario, Mendoza and Tucumán each sound like themselves. Asking "¿de dónde sos?" — where are you from — is a good first line anywhere.
Spanish with "vos"
If you learned Spanish in a classroom, Argentina will surprise you. People say vos instead of tú (vos sabés, vos tenés), pronounce "ll" and "y" like "sh", and pepper sentences with che. Do not worry about getting it right. Most people are delighted that you are trying, and a video call is a far more forgiving place to practise than a classroom.
A few words go a long way: che (hey), dale (OK, sure), re (very — "re bueno"), boludo (between friends, mate; between strangers, careful).
When to call
Argentina runs on UTC-3 all year, with no daylight saving. Evenings start late: dinner around ten is normal, and conversation often runs well past midnight. If you are in Europe, an Argentine evening is your night; from North America's east coast it is only one or two hours ahead of you.
Small things that help
- Bring something to talk about: football, music, travel, food, the weekend.
- If you see someone with a mate gourd, ask about it. You will get an explanation, and probably an opinion.
- Keep personal details for later: no phone numbers, no addresses, no social handles in the first minutes. If someone pushes you to another app, skip.
- Report anything that crosses a line. The site runs active moderation and the report button is always one click away.
